Inner Child, 2025 Single-channel reflection with light, memory, and personal mythology As a child, Orfeo never fit the frame. Dreamy. Sensitive. Different. Raised between a strict Surinamese father and a Dutch mother, there was little space for softness—or self-definition. Braids were forbidden. Feeling too much was a threat. Television offered something reality didn’t: safety, imagination, and recognition. Inner Child is a return to that space. Not as nostalgia, but as a study in survival. The work is deeply informed by Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow, a trans coming-of-age story that blends horror, surrealism, and emotional realism. In the film, two teenagers—disconnected from their bodies and unsafe in their homes—bond over a mysterious TV show called The Pink Opaque. Through it, they begin to feel seen, real, and possible. The screen becomes their escape, and eventually, their transformation. Orfeo saw himself in the film’s protagonist, played by Ian Foreman. A child who didn’t quite belong. The protagonist’s sense of non-belonging, rooted in their trans identity, mirrors Orfeo’s own childhood loneliness shaped by his bicultural upbringing. Inner Child channels this, seemingly universal, feeling. Of aching to become, of mourning who you couldn’t be, of slowly stepping into the truth of your own reflection. The work holds space for longing, for gender as a quiet revolution, and for the power of media to name what the world refuses to see.
